Have questions about the CFA journey?
Find clear answers to the most common doubts about eligibility, fees, exams, and career opportunities.
Yes, you can pursue CFA before an MBA. Many candidates choose CFA first because it provides strong finance fundamentals and global recognition, which can boost your MBA applications and career profile. An MBA is broader (management, leadership, strategy), while CFA is specialized in finance and investments. Doing CFA first gives you an edge in finance-focused MBA programs.
To become a CFA® Charterholder, you need to pass all 3 levels of the CFA exam. You can register for the level 1 exam if you meet the education and/or work experience requirements. The years of professional work also count when you pass the exams and want to use your CFA® designation. Aspirants willing to pursue CFA® must comply with the eligibility criteria.
The eligibility for the CFA® Level 1 program is as follows:
- Candidate must hold a Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in any discipline.
- A candidate who is in the final year of the Bachelor’s program at the time of registration can also apply for the CFA® program.
- Applicants need to have at least four years of work experience.
To become a CFA® charter holder, you must have:
- all 3 levels of the exam were completed AND
- at least 4,000 hours of relevant investment-related work experience, completed in a minimum of 36 months (full-time and part-time jobs, as well as remote work arrangements – before, during, or after your participation in the CFA® Program – qualify).
Yes, many candidates pursue CFA while working full-time. Since the CFA exam preparation requires 300–350 hours per level, candidates usually balance it with their jobs by following a structured study plan. Weekend study, online classes, and disciplined scheduling make it manageable.
On average, it takes 2.5 to 3 years to complete all three levels of the CFA Program. The minimum possible time is around 18 months if you clear each level in the first attempt, but most candidates take longer due to work or study commitments.
- Global recognition in investment and finance roles
- Better job opportunities in investment banking, equity research, portfolio management, risk management, and consulting
- Enhanced credibility and networking opportunities through CFA Institute membership
- Higher earning potential and competitive advantage in finance-related careers
There are 3 levels in the CFA Program:
- Level I: Focuses on basic knowledge and understanding of investment tools.
- Level II: Emphasizes application and analysis with a focus on asset valuation.
- Level III: Focuses on portfolio management and wealth planning.
The salary of a CFA charterholder in India typically ranges from ₹6–12 LPA at entry to mid-level roles. With experience and senior positions (like portfolio manager, risk manager, or investment banker), salaries can go beyond ₹20–40 LPA. Factors like role, industry, and company size matter a lot.
There is no limit to the number of times you can attempt the CFA® exams, so candidates can continue to retake the exam until they pass.
